ENRICHING BEAUTY

February 1, 2014  Saturday

Life

Beauty

Makeover

Last month we spent a lot of time going over the things that enhance our inward beauty both of the mind and in the heart. This month, we are going to discuss enriching and enhancing your beauty by the things you put in your body (food) and the things you do to your body (physical activity, clothes and make up).

We are going to discuss how to care for yourself properly, without going too far into obsession in any of these areas.

I have found that the more you learn to care for yourself, the more you learn to respect yourself and cherish the person that you are.

It is a beautiful thing when you can truly love you for you.

So get ready to give your life a beauty makeover. :)

EAT RIGHT

February 2, 2014  Sunday

Whatcha

Eatin?

One of the most important things to take into account when wanting to care for yourself and enrich your beauty is to be very careful with what you eat. The food that you put into your body has a huge impact on not only the way you look but on the way you feel.

The food pyramid is always a good guide to follow if you are wondering what to eat and how much. Over the next few days, I will give you some secrets of things you can eat that are very healthy for you and will make a big difference in your energy.

Eat crazy for tonight as you watch the Super Bowl but be ready to make some changes come tomorrow.

Eat to

Live

If you are like me, you probably pay attention to all the articles that discuss healthy eating habits and the best things to eat and when to eat them.

I realize that I am only given one body and I need to make every wise choice that I can to keep it healthy and strong. Every single thing that you put into your body will affect you in one way or another.

The American culture has gotten into a habit of putting junk into their bodies by fast food, processed foods, candy, soda etc ... It is advertised everywhere and we just mindlessly give into it, without realizing the effects they are having on our bodies.

Food is meant to give us energy and keep us alive. We have turned food into some sort of god. Living to eat instead of eating to live.

If you want to get your life back onto a healthy track, a healthy lifestyle (not a diet), start by reading this very detailed and informative site about healthy eating. Start making little changes here and there to your eating habits and you will start seeing a difference in many different areas of your life.

SUGAR

February 4, 2014  Tuesday

It hit me like a ton of bricks. Out of no where, all my energy just vanished. I could not drink coffee to kick it back up. I was constantly tired. Slept for 10 plus hours a night and would take naps in the day. I had no energy to work out or do much of anything else. I knew that I was seriously ill. But I had no clue why or what to do to fix it. So I lived this way for months, feeling like a dead person and knowing that if I did not do something soon I may not be alive much longer.

I knew that my body was telling me something. I felt like it was telling me that I needed more nutrients. So I started taking vitamins and iron and those things only helped a little. It wasn’t until I decided to make a change of my food intake lifestyle that I finally came back to life and could be myself again.

I had to cut way back on my sugar intake. I had talked with a friend who is very health conscious and she was telling me that sugar is nothing more than a poison to your body. And it is so true. I never really seen it that way. Now that I think of sugar as a poison and seen what it really does, it is not so difficult to stay away from. Here and there I will have some small dessert but it is no longer part of my daily life and I choose to eat the healthy choice over the sugary choice.

Picture of BEAUTY of the Day

Lets start at the top of the pyramid and work our way down. At the top of the pyramid, we have sugar and fats. As we have been taught, these are the things that we need to stay away from. The things we should not eat much of - maybe once a week.

The bad part about this section of the pyramid is that this is the most addicting of all the foods and the most “delicious.” Once we get a small taste, our bodies crave it more and more.

Not too long back, I was completely addicted to sugar and a major Chocoholic. It did not help that I have worked in chocolate factories for years. I know how to make all the goodies and I know how to make them GOOD.

For a good while, I ended up eating more sugary foods, desserts and chocolate than I did any real food. People would always tell me that I would regret it. But I was in my early 20’s and nothing affected me. So I kept doing it.

But even though I did not realize it, I was harming my body. I was not feeding it the proper nutrients it needs to stay energized and healthy and working properly. I was not getting affected by it right away so I just kept it up. Feeding my body trash and neglecting any form of nutrition.

It was not until I was coming up on my 25th birthday that I had started to realize there was something seriously wrong with me. By this time, I had gotten into a more healthy lifestyle. I was feeding myself nutritious food but I still was taking in an overdose of the sweets.

CRAVINGS

I stumbled upon this great guide. It shows you what your body really needs when you get cravings for those sugary or fat foods. Try switching to some of these other options and see if they satisfy your cravings.

What

should I

eat??

MEAT & DAIRY

Picture of BEAUTY of the Day

The next rung on the food pyramid is dairy products and meat. It is recommended to have only 2-3 servings of both these sections a day.

It is not so much these foods that your body needs as it is the nutrition that it gives your body, such as calcium. Calcium can be found in many other things as well.

I am not a vegetarian but I am not big on meat or much dairy products. I never have been. The one thing I cannot live without is my cheese though. I often find myself eating a slice or two of cheese a day.

I do have many friends that are vegetarians though and some of them have shared the health reasons as to why they avoid meat and dairy products and get their nutrition else where.

One interesting fact is, we are the only mammals that continue to drink milk past being a baby. We do not even drink milk of other humans, but of an animal. It is kind of weird when you think of it.

Red meat is the worst kind of meat for you and white meat is the most healthy meat for your body.

FRUITS & VEGGIES

February 8, 2014  Saturday

The

Better

Choice

The next step down the ladder is among the most important for the nutrients that your body needs to stay strong and healthy. Many people take for granted the Fruits and Vegetables but these are filled with the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to work correctly.

If you are dealing with some health issues, that are not caused by smoking or drinking, a real good way to get your health back is to cut back on much of the other areas of the food pyramid and do a fruit and veggie fast for a good three weeks. These foods have a way of cleansing you out through and through. You will feel so much better. Many of our health issues are caused by our eating habits. We eat way too much of the foods that are really bad for us and not enough of the foods that our bodies really need.

Remember when I told you that I had been eating way too much sugary foods and became really ill? Well, the only thing that helped me feel better was taking in extra nutrients and dismissing much of the junk that I was over consuming. I started doing the green juices/smoothies for lunch every day. I put in it spinach, broccoli, carrots and a whole bunch of good, green veggies and a piece or two of fruit.

You would not believe how much my energy and health have increased. It was an immediate change for me. I feel like a completely different person. I really have not felt this good in years. I am so happy that I made this healthy change.

If you are feeling low on energy, or are battling with some illnesses that are keeping you down, try putting in a bunch more veggies and fruit. See how different you feel after a short while.

GOING GREEN

February 9, 2014  Sunday

Green

Smoothies

Yesterday, I briefly introduced my start on going green. At the beginning of this year, I started drinking the green juices/smoothies everyday for lunch.

This is not exactly a new fad or diet but it is something that has recently become very popular because so many people are starting to realize how unhealthy their lifestyles are. They are beginning to take ownership of their body and are taking responsibility to bring it back it good health.

I was never a person to jump on every healthy bandwagon. I’ve tried to be healthy in some things but I never went “overboard.” Now I have been reading and seeing the bad effects that the processed, junk food and un-organic foods have had on my body and on others.

I have chosen to make a lifestyle change for the better. I know that you only have one life on this earth. Many people take the philosophy that they are going to live it to the fullest and do whatever they want. If you choose to take this journey to become a healthier you, you will live longer and in less pain, with less illness on this earth.

Junk is only fun for a season. Then you have to deal with the consequences.

So for those who are interested in the green smoothies, here are some recipes that you can go by. Mix it up and have fun with it. But lookout, because a healthier you is soon on its way.

I hope you are enjoying your green smoothies. Here is another way to make them that has some different adds in than the one I posted yesterday.

I know that changing your eating lifestyle is a big step. It is difficult and hard to give up some of the things that you enjoy eating. Your body will thank you in ways you never could imagine and in ways that those "junk" foods could never do for you.

Stick to it. Stay strong. Love your body enought to care for it.

GRAINS

February 12, 2014  Wednesday

The last level of our food pyramid are the whole grains. These we are meant to have a larger amount of servings because this is where our bodies are able to pull much of the energy that we burn throughout the day.

This section of the pyramid can get awfully confusing though. I, for one, love my carbs. I am a pasta girl all the way. But it is important to eat the right carbs, the ones with actual whole grains. Unfortunately, much of the other pastas and breads are made with bleached flour and that is definitely not good or healthy for your bodies.

It is also important to be wise when choosing whole grain items from the grocery store. Much of what you find there is not truly whole grain and it made with the same bad chemicals.

Our bodies were not made to process these chemicals. So what ends up happening, is we tend to store them as fat on our body because it does not know what else to do with it. I have been doing some research about the best options for whole grain eating. I will let you know once I find something. But for now, it looks like we may need to go back to making our own breads and noodles from scratch.

EAT SMART

February 13, 2014  Thursday

Whatcha

Makin?

I am by no means an expert on food, diet or how our bodies work. I know from first hand experience what things have an affect on my body in good and bad ways.

It seems to me that many food options are getting more unhealthy and things that were not so good for your body before have become a lot worse. Everyone of us just needs to take the extra initiative to do research and be smart about what we are putting in our bodies.

One great way to know what you are putting into your body is to be the one that makes the food. Cooking is really not hard at all. Just follow the directions on the recipe.

There is a great blog that I follow that gives recipe to all kinds of delicious foods and helps you stay smart about the food you are eating.

BREAD MAKING

February 14, 2014  Friday

Start from

Scratch

To start off, I want to wish everyone a very Happy Valentine's Day. I spent the majority of the day at work in the chocolate store. As you can imagine it was quite busy but it is the best place to be on Valentine's Day, filled with love and happiness.

Since we have been discussing the healthier choice for our bodies, I have been looking for more ways to care for myself by the foods I eat.

I had discussed making bread in the "Grains" blog. This would be the only way to know if what you are eating is whole or not. When you cook your food yourself, you are able to better care for your body by leaving out all the bad chemicals and perservatives that are found in so many other foods.

There is a great blog that I found that gives recipes to all kinds of breads you can make. This blog as a whole is pretty cool because they teach you a lot of different things about homemaking.

LET'S GET PHYSICAL

February 16, 2014  Sunday

Walk it

Out

Now that we have spent so long on food, I hope you have been able to get a better understanding of what is good for you and what is best to stay away from. I hope you have found a new love and desire to properly care for your body. It is the only one you will ever have. Once you ruin it, its a long and hard road back.

Eating right is the first step to a more beautiful, healthy and happy you. When you eat well not only will you notice a difference in your weight but also in your skin, your face, your hair and your nails. Every part of you benefits from a healthy lifestyle.

The next step is to add physical activities into your everyday life. It is a proven fact that when you exercise, you alleviate stress, your mood lightens and you are just plain happier. When you are happier, you are able to enjoy the world around you. You can finally see the beautiful world that you are living in.

People do not just workout and maintain an active lifestyle to lose weight. They do it because it makes them feel good all over. All parts of their body, seen and unseen benefit from being active.

So for the next few weeks, we will talk about physical activities, stretching, cardio, weights and all those good things that keep your body, your heart and your mind happy and healthy.

AB TIME

February 17, 2014  Monday

Planks,

Crunches

...

We will start out with the abs. Your abs are something that you should workout everyday. There are numerous exercises that you can do to workout your core. I would say 15-20 minutes a day working on your core muscles is good to keep them strong.

Strengthening your core is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is also very important for safety reasons. When your core is strong, you are less likely to get injuries in that part of your body. Your core is where all your vital organs are. Building the muscles up around them, gives them a nice cushion from serious injuries.

In order to workout all the muscles in your core it is good to switch up the different exercises that you do for your core. If you just do the same exercises over and over everyday, you miss some of the muscles in your core.

When starting out, you do not want to push yourself too much. Let your body get used to it. Do as much of a rep that you can or hold the positions for as long as you can. But as you continue to workout your abs and your core, it is important to increase the reps and the amount of time you hold it. It is good to push a little extra every time to continue strengthening your muscles.

Here are some different core routines that you can try. Test out the different workouts, keep what works for you and if it does not work find something else.

LEG DAYS

February 18, 2014  Tuesday

Unlike our core, we should alternate days when working out our legs and our arms. One day you can work on legs, the next day on your arms. The reason for this is you can injure yourself if you work them out all the time. It does not give your muscles a chance to re coop.

I made this mistake last spring. I was going hard everyday working on my legs, doing squats and lunges and all these different leg exercises 5 days a week for about 3 months. Then my knees started hating me and I had to back off so that I could give my body time to heal.

Like I said with the ab workouts yesterday, start slowly but push yourself a little further every time you workout. Try the different exercises and make a routine that works for you.

PUMP IT

We worked on our legs yesterday, so it would only be fair to workout our arms today.

You can do the normal workouts with push ups. Or if you have some small weights, you can try these different arm excercises.

Do not over do it. Start slow and work your way up. If you have arm or shoulder injuries, I would consult your doctor about what the best arm workouts will be for you.

CARDIO

February 20, 2014  Thursday

Pick up

the beat ..

heart beat

We have spent a few days talking about different weight routines that are used for toning and strengthening the main parts of your body. The great thing about lifting weights is that hours after you are done, your body is still burning calories from you using your muscles.

Along with weights, it is important to get a good 20 to 30 minute cardio activity workout as well. Many people like to do the cardio after the weights because some think it helps burn twice as much.

One of the best cardio workouts is running. But with every form of cardio, it is important to be careful. You need to learn the correct posture, have the right shoes or gear and do a little research before diving in.

Swimming, dancing, zumba - anything that gets your heart beat up for a good 20 to 30 minutes a day is very beneficial not only to your health but also to your heart.

I know you are probably reading this and thinking, where am I going to find the time to do all of this? My advice to you is to start out with one thing and keep at it for a while. Soon you will find that you have more energy and that makes you feel like you have more time in the day to do more.

Try not to think of working out as a chore but more of a way to show yourself that you care. Take a little extra time to yourself and show yourself special treatment by giving it some movement and strength. It will thank you in more ways than one.

REACH FOR THE STARS

February 21, 2014  Friday

Give those

muscles

some lovin'

Stretch. If you could not guess, today’s topic is on stretching. Stretching is super important for any time you are going to lift weights or do any cardio or anything. Stretching is great even to do a few times a day whether you have the chance to work out or not.

Stretching has multiple benefits. Stretching gives you more energy because you are opening yourself to more oxygen, which in turn gives your brain more oxygen and gives you a nice burst of energy to last for a few hours. Stretching also prepares your muscles for a good weight lifting or cardio routine. When you stretch, you are lessening the possibility of injuries to your muscles.

I often stretch before and after a workout. I stretch in the morning when I wake up and it gives me more of a boost than coffee does. Then I stretch before I go to bed at night. This helps you sleep more peacefully through the night. It is amazing how much stretching can do for you. And it just plain feels good.

When you stretch, do a few different poses and hold for a good 15-30 seconds. Each stretching routine you do through the day should last for about 5 minutes. You will be amazed at how you feel once you start adding stretching to your day.

Below are a few night time stretches, but you can find so much more on pinterest and all over the internet.

FITNESS MISTAKES

February 24, 2014  Monday

Watch out

for these ...

I read a great article by Hut Allred, the owner of NewWaveFitness.com, and felt like it would be great to share. The article is titled, “Six Fitness Mistakes to Avoid in the New Year.”

I will just give you a break down of the six mistakes so that you can work on them if you are not already coordinating them into your routine.

Mistake #1 - Focusing on just one part of wellness. You cannot truly be healthy or loose weight if you are only working out your muscles. You must have a nutritious diet, strengthen your muscles and have regular cardio workouts.

Mistake #2 - Not cleaning up your diet first. You can workout all you want but if you are still consuming trash and neglecting the nutrients that your body needs, you are doing nothing for yourself. This is why I began with nutrition this month. This way we can get our diets in order and then bring on the workouts.

Mistake #3 - Starting too fast when beginning. Like I have mentioned over and over in my workout blogs, start out slowly and gradual work your way up to the next levels in all your workout activities.

Mistake #4 - Skipping the warm ups, cool downs and stretches. Go back to the blog I wrote on stretching. It is important to warmup before each work out and cool down after each one to allow your heart to adjust to the new pace and to reduce muscle aches that will come later.

Mistake #5 - Not being accountable. Many people need either a workout buddy or someone that will help them stay on top of their new healthy lifestyle. If that is you, find a friend today to keep you on track.

Mistake #6 - Listening to bad advice. Not everyone you talk to knows what they are talking about. The best people to talk to are nutritionists and personal trainers that can give you guidance on what will work well for you.

I hope these help you in your journey to a more healthy, energized and beautiful you.

BEAUTIFUL CARE

February 25, 2014  Tuesday

Touching the

Surface

We have spent the majority of this month focusing on nutrition and fitness, two major components to enriching your beauty. If you have been following a long with me and making some changes to your lifestyle, I am sure you are seeing some great results. But I feel like we have spent plenty of time on those subjects and now we can move on to other ways of enriching your beauty.

These next few weeks we will focus on proper ways to care for your face, hair, teeth, skin and nails. How to use makeup to enhance your beauty. And much more goodies.

As a model, my face and my body are my product. I have to take extra special care of the whole of me. So I am really into all of these different things. I feel like I am pampering myself when I get to indulge in these beauty secrets. I can really feel a difference and see a difference. The great thing is, many of them are simple at home remedies you can do, so they do not cost a fortune.

I want you to remember when we are going through all of these beauty secrets, these things do not make you beautiful. You are already beautiful all on your own. These are just great ways to enhance your beauty. To really get to experience your beauty in a different way and to fall in love with yourself all over again.

PAMPERED TOOTSIES

February 26, 2014  Wednesday

Keep your

feeties happy

None of these pictures are pictures of me feet.

We are going to start with our feet and work our way up. Our feet get the worst of it and too many times we do not give them the love they need.

I know I tend to forget that my feet even exist in the winter. It is so cold that I keep them in socks 24/7 except when I am taking a shower (:-).

So I am going to give you 3 beauty secrets for your feet to get them feeling loved, soft and happy.

Loved Feet #1: My feet do not get a professional pedi as often as they would like. However, I have found a way to get them feeling loved in my own home. You will need a little bucket, plastic container or a small foot spa that can hold both of your feet. I fill it with warm water, enough to cover both feet. Then I add a half cup of mouthwash and a half cup of apple cider vinegar. Let your feet soak in it for 15-20 minutes. Read a chapter or two from a good book while you are waiting. When your feet come out, they are really soft and it is the perfect time to get rid of the dead skin. The Ped Egg works really well for me. After I have scraped them, I apply some body butter and then my polish. Voila! Like new.

Soft Feet #2: You know how I said I wear socks all winter, well I found a way to make my feet feel great all winter with those socks. This trick I do not do in the summer because in Florida it gets way too hot for socks. For this, all you need is some really nice, thick socks and either petroleum jelly or body butter. I use petroleum jelly and I smear it thick all over both feet, clear up to the ankles. Then I put my socks on over it and wear it too bed. I do it about 3 to 4 nights each week all winter. It makes my feet look amazing and feel super soft.

Happy Feet #3: Since we use our feet to walk, run and all the other great things, they often encounter more dirt then the rest of our bodies. This last trick super cleans your toe nails, making them whiter than your teeth. ;) This trick also works really well when you have just taken your polish off your toes and they have that yellowy tint to them. All you do is mix a TBSP of peroxide and a TBSP of baking soda and let it sit on top of each nail for about 5 minutes. You will be amazed at how great your toes look when the mixture is rinsed off.

Give your feet a little pampering and prepare to be amazed at all the cool things you can do right in your own home. And to think, you used to pay people to do this for you ;)

Please note: All of the things that I share in my blogs are things that I have used or done before. The beauty secrets that I will be sharing and shared today are things that I use on a consistent basis. I know that they work and I am not just telling you stories. However, everything does not always work for everyone. Try what you like and if it does not work than move onto the next thing.

Family

Famiy is such a beautiful gift and too often I forget that and forget to appreciate them. This is me, my brother, mother and sister. I love them sooooo much.

TOTAL CLEAN

Tips for the Energy Drained Skin: If your skin is needing a little pick me up try this out. This tip also helps diminish the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite (it does not remove them though). Mix together coffee grounds, olive oil and sugar into a paste. Heat it in the microwave for about 20 seconds. For five minutes, massage it onto the skin that needs some extra glow. Then take a warm towel and wrap it around that area for 15 minutes. After that time, rinse it off in the shower. If you are doing this to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, I would do it a few times a week for about a month.

I hope these tips will help you care for and rejuvenate your body. Come back tomorrow for more great tips and beauty secrets.

Creativity

The little chocolate shop that I work at hires an interior decorater to decorate for all the seasons and holidays. He just finished spring yesterday. I always love the new designs. But this one made me especially happy with the bright colors and flowers and kites.

Tips for those Rough Around the Edges: If you seem to have drier skin or you find that lotion does not really do the trick for you, this one is for you. This is also a good exfoliator so if you have been out camping or hiking and need a bigger scrub down than usual, do this before taking your shower. There are a few ways to make this scrub so you can find the ingredients that you like best. Mix together some flower petals, sea salt or sugar and oil (olive or coconut) or body butter. Once you have a nice paste, rub it all over your body or the areas that you feel you need it the most. Massage it in really well and then rinse it off in the shower. (You could use this on your face but I would not use body butter, I would not do it often and I would be much more gentler when massaging).

Today’s focus is on your body as a whole. Arms, legs tummy - the whole works. I will give you tips on easing a hard worked body, on softening your body and on energizing your skin. These tips for today can be used on any part of your body but I would avoid doing them to your face because your facial skin is much thinner and fragile than the rest of you.

Tip for the Hard Worker: If you live a very active lifestyle, are on your feet a lot and just need to ease those sore muscles, this one is for you. Set up a nice, warm bath and add about 2 cups of Epsom Salt to the bath water. Just allow yourself to relax in the bath for a good 20 to 30 minutes. I am not much of a bath taker, I prefer showers because they do not take as long, but occasionally I will splurge and allow myself to soak in the bath. I even put on soft music, light some candles and throw a few rose petals in. Why not go all out :) As you soak, you will feel all the tension and stress melt away.

Colors

I absolutely love these colors together. The deep, rich green compliments the hot pink very well. Looking at them together makes me smile.
